Project history

Balashovsky overpass (Balashovsky bridge) in Kharkiv city — a highway and tram bridge, built before the opening of the tram route along the line “Pushkinska Street — KhPZ”. Before the start of World War II in 1941, the structure had limited load capacity, and armored vehicles released at KhPZ were forbidden to cross the bridge.

After the war, the overpass was put into operation in 1946, and since then it has become an important transport artery connecting the central part of Kharkiv with large residential and industrial areas. Thousands of cars, trams, and pedestrians used it daily. Over time, constant loads, vibrations, and atmospheric effects led to wear of the structures and the need for major intervention.

Solution

The task of reconstructing the Balashovsky bridge was comprehensive: to restore the load-bearing capacity, strengthen the durability of the structures, and provide complete protection of the new reinforced concrete slab from moisture, frost, and temperature fluctuations.

The general contractor carried out the installation of the new reinforced concrete slab and installation of rails using an innovative technology that prevents the transmission of vibration loads to the load-bearing structure. Our team took on the stage of creating the waterproofing complex and preparing the base for the finishing coatings. We realized that the quality of our work would determine how long the bridge would serve after reconstruction.

We applied a new generation polyurethane waterproofing that:

forms a monolithic, seamless, and waterproof layer;
withstands significant mechanical and temperature deformations;
is resistant to frost, ultraviolet, and chemical reagents;
extends the service life of the slab for decades.

The combination of careful surface preparation and advanced waterproofing technologies allowed creating protection that works as a single system together with the bridge structure.

The process of working with an object

01-Concrete pouring 02-Preparatory work 03-Waterproofing 04-Finishing work
1

Stage 1

Concrete pouring

Pouring and leveling the concrete slab.
Curing and care of the concrete to achieve design strength.
Installation of rails.
Stage 2

Preparatory work

Sandblasting cleaning of old reinforced concrete elements and slab from cement milk.
Shotcreting of the "curb" concrete.
Formation of rounding for water drainage.
Arrangement of deformation joints.

Stage 3

Waterproofing

Application of polyurethane coating, elastic and resistant to frost, moisture, and ultraviolet.
Creation of a monolithic protective layer without seams.

Stage 4

Finishing work

The technology we proposed allows laying asphalt directly on the waterproofing, which was done by the subcontractor.
