Project history
Balashovsky overpass (Balashovsky bridge) in Kharkiv city — a highway and tram bridge, built before the opening of the tram route along the line “Pushkinska Street — KhPZ”. Before the start of World War II in 1941, the structure had limited load capacity, and armored vehicles released at KhPZ were forbidden to cross the bridge.
After the war, the overpass was put into operation in 1946, and since then it has become an important transport artery connecting the central part of Kharkiv with large residential and industrial areas. Thousands of cars, trams, and pedestrians used it daily. Over time, constant loads, vibrations, and atmospheric effects led to wear of the structures and the need for major intervention.
Solution
The task of reconstructing the Balashovsky bridge was comprehensive: to restore the load-bearing capacity, strengthen the durability of the structures, and provide complete protection of the new reinforced concrete slab from moisture, frost, and temperature fluctuations.
The general contractor carried out the installation of the new reinforced concrete slab and installation of rails using an innovative technology that prevents the transmission of vibration loads to the load-bearing structure. Our team took on the stage of creating the waterproofing complex and preparing the base for the finishing coatings. We realized that the quality of our work would determine how long the bridge would serve after reconstruction.
We applied a new generation polyurethane waterproofing that:
The combination of careful surface preparation and advanced waterproofing technologies allowed creating protection that works as a single system together with the bridge structure.
