Project history

The owner of a private home in Heisenheim, Germany, contacted the company “VERTICAL CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGIES” On the property, there is a concrete tank with a capacity of approximately 10 m³, designed to collect rainwater from the roof.

After many years of operation, the tank had lost its airtightness. Water began to seep through the walls of the structure, making it impossible to continue operating the system. Our task was to restore the tank’s complete airtightness to ensure its continued operation.

By the time work began, most of the water had already been pumped out of the tank, and the tank itself had been prepared for inspection and waterproofing work.

Solution

Experience shows that when repairing concrete tanks, the biggest mistake is trying to solve the problem with a single material. Reliable waterproofing is not a single product, but a properly designed system in which each material serves its own purpose.

That is why the decision was made to use the complete Remmers system of materials, which has been used for many years to repair concrete structures.

The system includes:

Remmers Kiesol — for priming and preparing the substrate;
Remmers WP Sulfatex — as a sulfate-resistant bonding layer;
Remmers WP DS Level — for forming patches and spot repairs;
Remmers MB 2K — a two-component, flexible waterproofing membrane applied in two layers.

This approach makes it possible to create a continuous, seamless, watertight contour across the entire inner surface of the tank.

Stage 1

Start of Work and Preparation of the Tank

The necessary materials and equipment were delivered to the site. Most of the water was pumped out of the tank in advance, and the remaining water and moisture were removed using an industrial vacuum cleaner.

Stage 2

Mechanical Surface Cleaning

All internal surfaces of the tank were cleaned mechanically to remove contaminants, weak areas of concrete, dust, and residues from previous use. Once the cleaning was complete, the tank was thoroughly cleaned out.

Stage 3

Priming and Applying the Adhesive Layer

The prepared surfaces were treated with a primer. After that, an adhesion layer was applied to ensure that the subsequent materials would bond securely to the concrete substrate.

Stage 4

The Structure of a Screwdriver

A fillet was installed where the walls meet the bottom of the tank. It eliminates the sharp angle at the junction of the surfaces and allows for the formation of a continuous waterproofing contour.

Stage 5

Applying Waterproofing

Two coats of Remmers MB 2K were applied to the prepared surface in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the required drying time between coats.

Result

After the work was completed, the tank was prepared for a test fill with water. Recommendations regarding future operation were provided to the client, and it was suggested that the test fill be conducted in a few days, in accordance with the material manufacturer’s requirements.

The project was completed in accordance with Remmers technology, using a complete system of compatible materials.

Why Do We Use a Systems Approach?

We are convinced that lasting results are possible only when:

the cause of the problem has been correctly identified;
a carefully prepared foundation;
A complete system of materials is used;
All of the manufacturer's technical requirements are followed.

It is based on these principles that «VERTICAL CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGIES».
